USE CASE · AFFILIATE LINKS
Audit your affiliate links before they cost you money
Affiliate links break silently. The merchant changes their URL structure, an offer expires, or a tracking platform goes down. By the time you notice, you've lost weeks of commissions.
The problem
Affiliate links are long redirect chains by design: your tracking link redirects to the network, which redirects to the merchant, which may redirect again for geo-targeting or A/B testing. Any link in that chain can break without warning.
Common failure modes:
- Expired offers: The merchant discontinued the product. Your link redirects to a generic homepage or a 404.
- Changed URL structure: The merchant redesigned their site. Old product URLs now 404 or redirect to the wrong page.
- Network issues: The affiliate network's redirect server returns a 500 intermittently.
- Geo-blocking: The merchant's redirect works in the US but sends international visitors to a "not available in your country" page.
Revenue impact: A single broken affiliate link on a high-traffic page can cost hundreds of dollars per day in lost commissions -- and you won't see it in your analytics because the click still happened, the conversion just didn't.
How to audit with checkredirects.io
- Batch check all your links: Export your affiliate links from your CMS or spreadsheet, paste them into a batch check. See the full redirect chain and final destination for each one.
- Filter for problems: Sort by status code. Any 404, 500, or unexpected destination is a broken link that needs fixing.
- Set up a monitor: Create a monitor with your top affiliate links. Check weekly. Get a webhook notification if anything breaks.
- Export to Sheets: Keep a running log in Google Sheets. Compare week-over-week to catch gradual degradation.
Compare user agents
Some affiliate networks serve different redirects based on user agent. Use Compare User Agents to check if your links work correctly for mobile users, not just desktop.
